PYONGYANG, October 13 (KCNA) -- Young Hero Motorway was successfully completed. The 40 odd km-long motorway from Pyongyang to Nampo was laid by the young Korean people in less than two years at the hardest time.
It is the product of self-reliance ranging from design, materials, manpower to method of civil engineering.
The motorway running through mountains and fields and over rivers is wide enough for vehicles to run at the same time.
It has green belts, woodlands and scores of bridges and crossings of specific features in good harmony with dwelling houses for thousands of families.
The motorway has been built in such a way as to fully meet its scientific and technological needs including traffic safety. The construction of the motorway has improved the appearance of the fork at Mangyongdae, Chollima district, Chongsan-ri, Thaesong-ri and other significant towns and given a face-lifting to the appearance of the country.
It will help perfect the traffic network on the west coast and greatly contribute to the improvement of standard of people's living and the country's economic development.
Pyongyang has turned into a world-standard capital city of Juche Korea with a major port city.
The great monumental youth road to be conveyed with the history of the "arduous march" is a brilliant fruition of the bold and big operation and wise leadership of Kim Jong Il.
The young builders ran for nearly 700 days carrying earth of 14 million cubic meters with bags and stretches to build a roadbed in the do-or-die spirit. And they also finished the construction projects such as over 80 irrigation structures, some 50 bridges, over 3 million cubic meters of asphalt, 83.6 km truck road and connection road.
They planted at least 1.33 million trees of over 60 kinds to create 30 meter-wide woodlands, green belts of 800,000 square meters and 75,000 square meters flower garden on either side of the road.
33 spots of rivers and streams near the motorway extending 36.3 km were adjusted and 16.5 hectares grapery fields have been built in various places.
Kim Jong Il said that the young people are very admirable and he would like to seat all of them on cushions of gold and that a monument to the young builders should be erected to commemorate the large-scale motorway at the hard time.
In order to convey the immortal exploits of the party which trained the young people into heroes of era and performers of feats and the feats of the youth shock brigade members and army-builders who demonstrated their youthful wisdom and courage in the construction of the Pyongyang-Nampo Motorway, the Presidium of the Supreme People's Assembly of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea on October 11 issued a decree on naming the Pyongyang-Nampo Motorway "Young Hero Motorway."
Fully committed to realize a "powerful socialist state" -- the pillar slogan for this year chorused by major dailies in the DPRK -- north Korean people are determined to complete the Pyongyang-Nampo freeway by next year.
The eye-catching development project linking Pyongyang with the port city of Nampo, the largest trade hub in the western part of the country, was kicked off last fall and awaits its opening slated for Oct. 10, 2000 or the 55th anniversary of the founding of the WPK (Workers' Party of Korea)
With a total distance of 46.3 kilometers (from Mangyongdae District in Pyongyang to Chongnyon Bridge in Nampo), the motorway will be designed in style and will have updated technical specification.
According to the Pyongyang Times (Dec. 19, 1998), motorlanes will be scores of meters wide, flanked on both sides by 3-meter-wide sidewalks for pedestrians and bicycles and beyond them, by 3-meter-wide swards with two rows of trees.
"Young builders from across the country and Korean People's Army soldiers are now working hard on the project. Still at the initial stage of the project, over 100,000 cubic meters of earth have been removed and the road is taking shape in many sections," the DPRK's English daily said.
The motorway will not only serve for local residents but also benefit foreign businesses seeking to invest in Nampo city, which will be transformed into a tax-free bonded zone similar to the Rajin-Sonbong Economic Trade Zone in the east.
The opening date of the bonded zone has not yet fixed, however, foreign firms will be able to start business in the suggested area for which some 200 hectares of lands are earmarked, according to CPEEC. (Committee for the Promotion of the External Economic Cooperation)
"Joint ventures with north Korean firms operating in such areas will be exempt from import duties for raw and intermediate materials and will also be granted corporate and income tax breaks," said CPEEC vice chairman Kim Mun Song at a Hong Kong business forum in October 1997.
South Korean chaebols or family-controlled gigantic conglomerates are the first to profit from the Nampo area as the top 3 chaebols -- Hyundai, Samsung and Daewoo -- are/will be doing business in the zone.
The No. 1 Hyundai Group, which already won a 30-year-long exclusive right to invest in the DPRK's scenic Mt. Kumgang, sealed a multi-billion dollar agreement with the DPRK last December to build a massive industrial park in the western port city of Nampo and Haeju.
The runner-up Samsung Group is gearing up for its long-term joint venture in the bonded zone in which Samsung will set up $1 billion worth electronics complex by the year 2008.
The third largest Daewoo already earned some $20 million by exporting textiles manufactured at "National Industry Company," the first inter-Korean venture firm set up in Nampo in 1996.
